How Does Internet Work?
The Internet uses a special protocol or set of rules that allows data to move between computers made by different manufactures and host running different operating systems. This protocol has two parts: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP). This is referred to as TCP/IP.
The internet TCP/IP protocol works in a manner similar to the Postal Service. If you are sending a letter to a foreign destination, you put the letter in an envelope, address the envelope, and drop it in a mailbox. The letter is taken to the post office where it is sorted and routed to its destination. Your letter may be forwarded to many different post offices before it reaches the addressee.
When you send data on the Internet, a similar thing happens , but it is called packet switching. On the internet, TCP divides the data into pockets and IP puts a label with delivery instructions in each packet. The packets are sent along the network to their destination. Packets travelling to the same destination may not take the same route. Devices called routers strategically located on the Internet determine the most efficient path for each packet. The routers help distribute the traffic on the networks by avoiding sending packet along busy or downed lines and by adjusting for differences in processor speeds. When the TCP/IP packets arrive at their destination, the receiving computer reassembles and checks the packets for errors. If the receiving computer finds and error, it ask the sending computer to send another copy of the bad packet.
